The Changing Landscape of Street Drugs and Anesthesia

Course Description: Join us for an in-depth study club-style session where we explore the evolving world of street drugs and their implications for anesthesia. Led by Dr. Amanda Okundaye, a dentist anesthesiologist and associate program director at UNLV School of Dental Medicine, this session will cover a range of topics including patient evaluation, the impact of various street drugs such as fentanyl, xylazine, kratom, and psychedelics on anesthesia, and strategies for managing patients with a history of drug use. This is an excellent opportunity for dental professionals to enhance their knowledge and skills in dealing with the challenges posed by the use of street drugs in clinical practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand the impact of various street drugs on anesthesia, including opioids (e.g., fentanyl, nitazenes), sedatives (e.g., xylazine, medetomidine), psychedelics (e.g., psilocybin, DMT), stimulants (e.g., propylhexedrine, kratom), and potentiators (e.g., phenibut).
  2. Learn strategies for patient evaluation, including recognizing the most common drugs and their relevance to anesthesia.
  3. Gain insights into managing respiratory depression, hypotension, and other acute effects of these drugs during anesthesia.
  4. Discuss postoperative care challenges, such as extended sedation or delayed recovery in patients using drugs like xylazine or medetomidine.
  5. Stay updated on emerging trends in street drugs and their implications for clinical practice.
