United Way of King County - Community Resource Exchange, 2012
We need your expertise!
The United Way of King County is looking for dentists to help with screening and more complicated dental procedures, at Community Resource Exchange 2012. It’s a simple yet immensely powerful concept. In one place—on one day—the Community Resource Exchange connects thousands of people experiencing homelessness with the services and resources they need.

Details:

Friday, January 13, 2012
Century Link Field (formerly Qwest Field)
9:00 a.m.–2:30 pm

Homeless attendees enjoy a hot meal and have access to free health services, haircuts, voicemail accounts, legal assistance, public benefits, counseling, referrals to employment training and more. For more information, email: cre@uwkc.org or visit http://unitedwayofkingcounty.org/cre

If you are interested in being a provider at the Community Resource Exchange please register at https://volunteer.truist.com/uwkc/survey/?survey_id=10479131890. The plan is to have several dentists at the event doing screenings, and then other dentists located at the Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic providing more complicated procedures. Supporting the event is a great way to kick off the weekend to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Last April, over 1,800 people experiencing homelessness came to the Community Resource Exchange for a day of hope and help.

WSDA & UW School of Dentistry - Mentor Program
A joint effort of the WSDA and UW School of Dentistry, the Mentor Program began 18 years ago for students who wished to have a professional WSDA member assigned to them to use as a resource throughout the year.

The benefits to students are limitless; it helps them establish good relationships with professionals, gain insight into the importance of organized dentistry and first-hand observation of a working practice.

The WSDA pairs dental students with practicing dentists who consent to do the following: meet with and contact the student throughout the year, support and encourage the student during the year, educate him/her in areas of professional ethics, and help increase the student's awareness of the importance of organized dentistry.

If you would like to be a mentor, or to learn more about this program, please contact Wendy Wilson at wendy@wsda.org, or at 800.448.3368.

Christ Community Free Clinic, Auburn
Located on A Street in Auburn, this group has been providing low-income medical services for many years and is now branching out to offer dental services as well. They are house in the former Health Point Clinic space. CCFC has received generous equipment donations from Burkhart Equipment, and have two operatories. They are still in need of small equipment and volunteers.  The expectation is that dentist will select a convenient day to volunteer and appointments will be set accordingly.

Additionally, volunteer office staff, hygienists, Dental Assistants and IT professionals are needed to make the dental clinic fully functional. For more information, please click contact the Christ Community Free Clinic via email. Also, an updated list of needed equipment and instruments can be found at http://www.christfreeclinic.org.

Medical Teams International

Medical Teams International is an international relief and development organization.  In the Pacific Northwest, our Mobile Dental Program offers free/low-cost dental care to low-income individuals who have no other access to care. Urgent care needs are our priority.  Each of our eleven mobile units consists of two-chair operatories - with x-ray, current up-to-date equipment and instruments for all basic dental procedures.  Our ability to offer care is based solely upon the willingness of dental professionals to volunteer.

Dental volunteers are urgently needed to help with 6-hour dental clinics on the mobile van.  A dentist’s volunteer participation fulfills up to seven (7) annual hours of continuing education credit under WAC 246-817-440 – one credit for each hour volunteered.

Clinic hours are typically 8:00 am to 2:00 pm (sometimes 9:00 am to 3:00 pm).  A volunteer can specify time, date, location and population served.  When information is received from a volunteer, the volunteer is contacted by phone to get an idea of their availability, procedure ability and preference of population served (i.e. children, seniors etc.).  Since there are several vans available on any one day in several locations, there are usually some options to pick when volunteering.

For additional information and a volunteer application, if you and/or your staff are interested in helping with a clinic in the Puget Sound area, please contact Nancy Utt, Mobile Dental Program Manager for Medical Teams International at (425) 284-1936 or email: nancyutt@medicalteams.org
